Reading Strategies (Bilingual Books and Labels)

Reading Strategies
9. Bilingual Books and Labels
Bilingual Books and Labels are books written in two or more languages including English. They validate students home languages and allow them to use their L1 knowledge to support their understanding of texts.

  • The teacher will begin by identifying the languages represented in the classroom.
  • The teacher will then pronounce and label common objects. Meaning labeling the words and objects in the classroom.
  • The teacher will then provide bilingual books with text in both English and the students native languages.
  • The teacher should provide translations.
  • The teacher should explore and learn key vocabulary in several languages.
  • The teacher should monitor and evaluate your use of bilingual books in the classroom.
