Reading Strategies
3. Cloze
Cloze activities are based on written text in which some words are left out and blanks are inserted. The students are required to use context to create meaning. These activities allow the students to learn vocabulary and decoding skills, especially for ELL students.
- The teacher must begin by observing student reading behaviors. The teacher should note all of the students use of phonoly, meaning, and syntax cues, along with their self-monitoring.
- The teacher should then group the students for instruction, sitting students who are struggling with the same thing, together.
- Next is introducing Cloze, using a chart sentence, and have the students practice guessing the word and how they knew to guess the word.
- Then, the teacher should prepare/handout the cloze activity based on the students needs.
- Finally the teacher should be assessing students growth and progress through this activity and once the students have mastered the idea of Cloze the teacher can add technology to enhance learning.
