Reading Strategies (Guided Reading)

Reading Strategies and Activities
1.  Guided Reading
Guided reading is an approach to teaching reading in a small-group setting while providing individual coaching along the way.
  • To Begin Guided Reading a teacher may start with a book walk, which is just away for the students and teacher to look through the book and predict what will happen.
  • From there the students move on to a stage where there are reading at their own pace in small groups and the teacher is monitoring and assisting wherever it is needed.
  • During this guided reading process it is good for the teacher to implement mini-lessons based on the needs seen during the coaching and assisting.
  • Lastly, the teacher should assess the students progress on a regular basis. It would be smart to teach students how to read and comprehend with books on their grade level.
  • The students should be able to read the books with a 90-94 % accuracy and a 75% comprehension level.
