Reading Strategies
5. Repeated Reading
Repeated Reading is a process of re-reading familiar text. It is one of the most effective ways to support students as they develop fluency and comprehension and correct pronunciation. To take it further the students can then write scripts to use in a "readers theater". Using multi-leveled scripts will allow ELL students the opportunity to develop language a many levels.
- The teacher would begin by selecting a book, ensuring it is interesting to both the teacher and students, while relating to the content.
- The teacher would then read the book aloud to the class while engaging the students.
- Then, the teacher would demonstrate the format in which they want the students to to write the scripts. A good format for the students to use is speech balloons.
- Next, the teacher should write the script using shared writing technique, meaning the teacher is demonstrating how to begin the story, including the narrator and storyteller, etc.
- Once the script is written it should be typed up and the next day the students should be assigned their roles in their script.
- Then is should be highlighted and handed out to the students.
- The students would then perform the script.
- While the students are performing, the teacher should assess them and their comprehension of the story.
