Reading Strategies (Vocabulary Role-Play)

Reading Strategies
6. Vocabulary Role-Play
Vocabulary Role Play is a strategy that encourages learners to make connections among their past experiences, the content being studied, and vocabulary that is new or being used in an unfamiliar way.

  • The teacher will begin by identifying key vocabulary, meaning making cards with the unfamiliar words written on them.
  • The teacher will then teach the lesson or read the book, stopping when encountering the vocabulary words, pronouncing them and involving students in this activity.
  • The teacher will connect the vocabulary to past experiences, this is away for the students to connect these words to things in their everyday life,
  • The teacher will also sort through the vocabulary words, sorting them by meaning, if they are names, if they identify movements, etc.
  • Then the teacher will plan ways for the students to use the words.
  • At this point the teacher will then allow the students practice with the words.
  • Then after they have practiced the students will perform the scenes they have been given while focusing on multiple word meanings.
  • The teacher will assist the students in acting out the right meanings and getting a clear understanding of the vocabulary.
