Reading Standards

Reading 
Standards:
Florida Educational Standards 
1. 5th Grade: 

LA.5.1.6.1 The student will use new vocabulary that is introduced and taught directly.

2. 6th Grade: 

LA.6.1.6.3 The student will use context clues to determine meanings of unfamiliar words

3. 7th Grade:

LA.7.1.7.1 The student will use background knowledge of subject and related content areas, pre-reading strategies, graphic representations, and knowledge of text structure to make and confirm complex predictions of content, purpose, and organization of a reading selection.

4. 8th Grade:

LA.8.1.7.3 The student will determine the main idea or essential message in grade-level or higher texts through inferring, paraphrasing, summarizing, and identifying relevant details.

5. 9th Grade: 

LA.1112.1.7.2 The student will analyze the authors purpose and/or perspective in a variety of text and understand how they affect meaning.


ESOL Performance Standards:
1.1. a. : Understand and apply knowledge of concepts of cultural competence, particularly knowledge about how cultural identities affect learning and academic progress for students from diverse backgrounds and at varying English proficiency levels. 
2.1. a: Demonstrate knowledge of the components of language and understanding of language as an integrative and communicative system.
2.2. b: Recognize the importance of ELL's home languages and language varieties, and build on these skills as a foundation for learning English.
3.2. e: Provide standards based reading instruction appropriate for ELL's from diverse backgrounds and at varying English proficiency levels. 
3.2. i: Use appropriate listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities in teaching ELL's from diverse backgrounds and at varying English proficiency levels.
