Reading Strategies
7. Free Voluntary Reading
Free Voluntary Reading is powerful tool for involving students in the reading of English text. It is used to encourage silent, self-selected reading of enjoyable books written at the students independent levels.
- The teacher must begin by identifying the independent reading levels of each student.
- The teacher must then explain the reading program to the students. Meaning, informing them of how voluntary reading will benefit them and increase their reading comprehension. Let the students know that they will be rewarded when as a class they get to 50 books, 100 books, and 150 books, and every 50 books from then on.
- The teacher should then discuss the books with the students, telling them about each genre and authors, and as the students read they will discuss them too.
- The teacher should have the students keep a log or journal so that they can track the hours they read and the books.
