Reading Strategies
4. Collaborative Reading
Collaborative Reading is a strategy that assist English language learners when they are reading for information. This is a method for all students in the way they can all become experts on a topic.
  • The teacher will begin this strategy by gathering a range of books on a particular topic, these book should be at various reading levels so all students will be successful in finding important information.
  • Next, the teacher should organize heterogeneous groups, considering the needs of each student. The groups should be no more than four or five. Each group should also have at least one students with strong reading and writing skills.
  • A good way to benefit the note taking process in collaborative reading is KWL charts.
  • The teacher should provide good research instruction, the teacher may  have to teach a quick mini-lesson on taking notes and how to find information.
  • The students should then be practicing and sharing information within their groups.
  • During this and towards the end, the teacher should be documenting the groups progress and offering assistance if needed. The teacher should create a checklist of participation to have a goal in mind for each student.
