Reading Strategies
2. Close Reading
Close reading is a strategy that helps students uncover the layers of meaning that lead to deep comprehension.
- The teacher must begin implementing close reading into the classroom by demonstrating the process when reading aloud. Meaning , while reading the teacher should frequently pause and discuss vocabulary, word choice, and plot escalation.
- The teacher must also observe and document the students individual reading levels. Students should be reading content that is on level and that they are able to comprehend.
- The text should be short yet complex to promote comprehension.
- There should be a list of questions that after reading the students should be able to answer.
- Once completed the teacher should be able to document students strengths or weaknesses and from that data, prepare to reteach in the areas needed.
