6. Total Physical Response and Total Physical Response Storytelling
-Form of integrating movement into Language Acquisition
-Total Physical Response is an approach to second language acquisition based on first language acquisition research.
-The teacher gradually introduces commands, acting them out as she or he says them.
- The teacher should begin by choosing the vocabulary to physicalize.
- The teacher should introduce vocabulary gradually.
- Drop the physical modeling.
- Add the commands.
- Add more responses.
- Play games with the students for practice.
- Assess student progress and understanding.
- Periodically review the use of total physical response and plan to improve and expand the use of the strategy.
For TPR
- Start with TPR
- Incorporate hand TPR (hand gestures and signs to represent words)
- Ask some questions that can be answered with one word- Pantomine
- Start telling mini stories and have students repeat them.
- Teach students to tell their own stories.
- Continue to observe students, decide from here what lessons need to be retaught.
