Student Literature Strategies (Total Physical Response and Total Physical Response Storytelling)

Student Literature Strategies
6. Total Physical Response and Total Physical Response Storytelling
-Form of integrating movement into Language Acquisition
-Total Physical Response is an approach to second language acquisition based on first language acquisition research.
-The teacher gradually introduces commands, acting them out as she or he says them.

  • The teacher should begin by choosing the vocabulary to physicalize.
  • The teacher should introduce vocabulary gradually.
  • Drop the physical modeling.
  • Add the commands.
  • Add more responses.
  • Play games with the students for practice.
  • Assess student progress and understanding.
  • Periodically review the use of total physical response and plan to improve and expand the use of the strategy.
For TPR
  • Start with TPR
  • Incorporate hand TPR (hand gestures and signs to represent words)
  • Ask some questions that can be answered with one word- Pantomine
  • Start telling mini stories and have students repeat them.
  • Teach students to tell their own stories.
  • Continue to observe students, decide from here what lessons need to be retaught.
Ways can be seen in classroom:
