Science Strategies (Laboratories)

Science Strategies
10. Laboratories
-This is where the hands on science would take place in the classroom.
-Not all schools have the luxury of labs so teachers have to get creative.

  • The teacher can allow certain days of the month to be considered lab day, which is where the students would come in and know exactly what to expect and do.]
  • They would gather their lab notebooks, clean off desk, and prepare for the lab or activity.
  • The teacher would have to ensure that the materials for that activity are there.
  • The teacher would have to ensure that the students know how to navigate where all the supplies are.

Science Strategies (The 5 E Model)

Science Strategies
9. The 5 E Model
  • Engage- making connections
  • Explore- the students do research or dig deeper into a topic
  • Explain-the students write explanations on the topic
  • Elaborate-The students simplify the concept and apply it
  • Evaluate- the students take a test or quiz

Ways it can look in the classroom:

Science Strategies (Researching)

Science Strategies
8. Researching
-This is a way that can allow teachers to encourage technology use and show students the many ways they can find answers to scientific questions(or anything).
-Teaching students how to research allows them to learn how to gather information.

Steps to teach:

Stage 1: Focusing and planning
Questions relevant to the direction of the research are generated.
Stage 2: Sourcing information
Appropriate resources must be found. Using a range of different sources of information helps ensure the ideas are those commonly accepted.
Stage 3: Analysis
The information needs to be organised and then analysed to ensure that valid conclusions can be drawn.
Stage 4: Reporting
Finally the research must be reported. This can be done in various ways – for example a demonstration, a poster, a video or a report.

Science Strategies ( Word Games/Word List)

Science Strategies
7. Word Games and Word List
-Teacher use word walls in the classroom to reinforce vocabulary and concepts.
-Word games are good because it makes those hard vocabulary words stick in a fun way.

  • Bingo
  • Scrabble
  • Trivial Pursuit
  • Pictionary
  • Dingbats
  • Twenty questions, Who am I?
  • Breaking words down into smaller words. For example:
    • invertebrate — in, brat, tea, tear, rate, vertebrae…
    • photosynthesis — sit, sin, thesis, photos…
    • temperature — rate, temper, rut, tear, ate…
